There are three Scenarios for Scrum Master Services.

A) Setting up New Scrum Teams from Scratch
On three occasions I have set up Scrum Teams from scratch.  This is one of my favourite services, because it gives the opportunity to get it right the first time and I have seen some amazing results in the first few Sprints.

It involves recruiting team members with a balance of technical capabilities to be cross functional together with the right attitudes for team working and a blend of temperaments.  I also provide customised training to the roles of Scrum Development Team and Product Owner.  It is because I have also had experience as a Product Owner that I buddy side-by-side to practically show how to do all aspects of the Product Owner role in a “See One, Do One” approach.

B) Scrum Mastering an Existing Scrum Team
Becci brings the following skills in Scrum Mastery to a Scrum Team:

  • Facilitate Scrum Event: Sprint Retrospective
  • Facilitate Scrum Event: Sprint Review
  • Facilitate Scrum Event: Sprint Planning

Scrum Team Rescue Package
There have been numerous occasions where I have been initially brought in to just ‘fix it’ when a group of people aren’t function like a team.  They maybe aren’t getting along or others feel they aren’t getting the expected results.

The analysis involves: coffees with the individual team members; observing interactions and behaviours; reviewing past retrospective outputs; chatting with sources of bottlenecks or impediments; understanding management’s concerns; and conducting a fresh retrospective.

The action list can be a combination of these:

  • Replacing non-team players or those with poor attitude that chose not to change;
  • Empowering the team to self-organise;
  • Clarifying and re-setting boundaries to the scrum roles and responsibilities, especially around the Product Owner;
  • Establishing flow checkpoints;
  • Ensuring the Product Owner champions the definition of Ready User Stories;
  • Clarifying the Definition of Done and transparency of such;
  • Adjusting or setting up mirrored development environments;
  • Reviewing relative estimation practices;
  • Establishing links of trust within the team;
  • Establishing safe working place that rewards sharing, collaboration and pair work;
  • Checking visual management for Sprint Backlog;
  • Celebrate successes along the way in meeting Sprint Goals;
  • Communicating with stakeholders realistic output for the team and how to interpret the Scrum Team’s velocity metrics.
